Every wave of games industry layoffs arrives with the same vocabulary. Realignment. Rightsizing. A difficult but necessary decision. The language is designed to make a choice sound like weather.

The cycle is too regular

Studios staff up aggressively during production, ship, and then shed the people who made the thing within months of release. The cost of rebuilding that team next cycle is real, but it lands in a different quarter, and quarters are what get measured.

What gets lost

Institutional knowledge. The reason sequels so often feel like a studio relearning its own lessons is that, structurally, it is.

The exceptions

There are studios doing this differently, usually smaller ones with patient funding and a willingness to ship less often. Their games keep getting better in a straight line.
