The Rise and Quiet Retreat of the Gaming Chair
Capra Editorial · 6 Jul 2026 · 5 min read

The gaming chair was never designed for gaming. It was designed for a photograph. Bucket seats, contrast stitching, a silhouette borrowed from motorsport and optimised for a thumbnail.
The predictable part
People sat in them for eight hours a day and discovered that a shape built to hold a driver in place during cornering is a poor shape for typing.
The unglamorous replacement
Task chairs, mesh backs, adjustable everything, and prices that feel absurd until you divide by the years you will own it. The setups worth copying now look more like an architecture studio than a pit lane.
Do this first
If you are replacing one thing this year, make it this. Then raise your monitor. Then, and only then, argue about keyboard switches.
